May 12th, 2001 - Seniors Zone II Report Penticton Golf & Country Club
The second Seniors tournament in the Okanagan Valley was held on may 9th, at the Penticton Golf Club....This course was
not in the best of shape. It is a great credit to the grounds keeping force that it was playable at all. Normally this course is a
great challenge to any player. The fairways are narrow and well tree lined there is an abundance of sand traps and water
hazards come into play on many holes. The problem we encountered was that the fairways are extremely bumpy and you
never seem to get a level lie....it required a local rule for the tournament whereby we could lift clean and place (within 12 " by
hand).....even so ...the challenge was still there as you will see from the tourney scores...mind you the local members didn't
have a problem!...
The weather was much better this year....no monsoon rains or typhoon like winds but there was still a slight chill in the air
when the sun went behind the clouds. This golf course is a pleasure to play if you overlook it's minor short comings and take
in it's natural setting. However, there is no doubt that improvements must be made if they are to be competitive with the rest
of the courses in the South end of the Valley.....Major improvements at the old Cherry Grove (now Inkaneep Desert
Canyon)......Osoyoos Golf Club and Fairview Mountain in Oliver .....are going to leave Penticton behind the eight ball if
these changes are not made in the foreseeable future.
My playing partners for the day were Andy Kinsman, Sunset Ranch Golf Club (93), Tom Payne, Spallumcheen Golf Club
(75) (overall low net winner) and my good friend Bob Harris from the Fairview Mountain Course(84).....All are good fellows
and I look forward to playing with them again. (Especially BOB, who is now into me for 11 bucks !!.... It's a long year buddy!)
