June 6th, 2002 - Seniors Zone II Report
Sunset Ranch Seniors Tournament

GEORGE BARNES CAPTURES ANOTHER OKANAGAN SENIORS GOLF TOURNAMENT.

On June the 6th, George Barnes of the Kelowna Golf & Country garnered his third Seniors Title of this the year at the Sunset Ranch Golf and Country Club 2002 Seniors Open. He fired a 79 to win top honors in what proved to be, "D-Day" for the rest of the field. The overall LOW NET was won by John Unger from the Summerland Golf Club with a score of (67).

Old man winter will just not leave us alone. The start of day was cold and cloudy, with a hint of rain in the air. If that had been all we had to worry about things would not have been to bad but the blustery wind was the down fall for many golfers during the day. Scores were higher than usual due to the weather and no doubt the speed of the greens contributed to scores as well.

It is regrettable that the turn out was not a full field, this is such a good tournament that anyone who turned it down for what ever reason really missed out. Hopefully those who were no shows this time will return next year.

This was, with out a doubt, one of the best organized tournaments so far this year. Power carts were clearly marked for each contestant, the registration desk was handled extremely well and coffee, muffins and fresh fruit was available for the golfers. The presentation of awards went smoothly and quickly. The excellent dinner (Steak Sandwich) was personally served by the very friendly and smiling staff. (NO calling of table numbers !) A complimentary jug of beer was presented to each group of golfers.

Why was this Tournament so successful ? I believe it was due to the hard work and organizational skills of all the Volunteers. Bob Barton, Ken Lidgren, Ken Firkins. Bev Lauder, Don Lauder, Jack McGreevy, Dorothy McGreevy,Ron Litzen, Jenine Trudeau, Irene Clagett and Bruce Vermee (CPGA PRO). We, the golfers thank you for a job well done.

LOW NET winner was Henry McDaniel from K.G.C.C. (72), followed by Ernie Cherkowski, Vernon Golf Club (72), in third spot was Bill Ford from Fairview Mountain (73).
