May 15th, 2002 - Seniors Zone II Report
Ponderosa Golf Club

On May the 15th the Senior Men's Club held their 3rd annual Open at the Ponderosa Golf Club in Peachland, BC. This tournament keeps getting better and better as the tournament committee irons out minor problems from the past and the improvements are noticeable.

This year, the weather has not been very co-operative. The early hours are quite cool and the wearing of extra clothes makes it practically essential. This odd weather condition has been throughout the Valley this year and even though it warms up during the play of game it is not what we want for the opening holes. It seems the older we get, the old bones need that extra burst of warmth to get us going.

Needless to say, the sun did come out and the rest of the day was very pleasant. With the exception of the winter damage done to the green on hole number five the course was in very good shape. The other greens (17 of them) were in excellent shape and were a pleasure to putt on. (Some may not agree, particularly on one small up hill par 3 hole!!).

Ron Thompson from Fairview Mountain Golf Club was the OVERALL LOW GROSS winner with a great (74), OVERALL LOW NET winner was Ken Davis from the Ponderosa Club with a (65) and the SUPER SENIOR LOW NET WINNER was Fred Kuzyk from the Penticton Golf Club. (76)

In the 0 to 12 handicap range , the LOW GROSS winner was Garry Gelowitz (74), Gord Cowland was second with (80), followed by Eber McPhee (82), Mick Johnson (83), Paul Prokpiuk (85) and Ian Nicholson took sixth place with a (85).

In the same handicap section (0-12) the LOW NET winner was Bob Slonski from the Spallumcheen Golf Club (70), second place went to George Barr (71), third was Reg Minty (72) followed by Walter Chambers (74), Tony Ritchie (74), and in the whoops position (6th) was Keith Belliveau from Fairview Mountain (75).

Peter Brown from the Ponderosa Club took the LOW GROSS title in the 13 to 15 handicap class with a (81). George Graff was second (83), followed by a member of my foursome Peter Wickland (85), Len Hentz (88), Ivan LeGrandeur (88), and David Jones (88)

In this same handicap section (13-15) the LOW NET winner was Dave Mello (69), in second place was my golfing partner Don Dale (71), followed another member of my foursome Mervin Parasuik (72), George Sabo (73), John Unger (74), Rick Gotobed (75).

David Simpson from River Ridge Golf Club in Lumby took LOW GROSS in the 16 to 19 handicap range with a (85), second was Lew Norman (89), third place was Russ Ward (90), followed by Don Davidson (92), Trevor Thompson (93), Tom Brennan (93).

In the same class (16-19) Jack Klein took LOW NET at (71), followed by Ken Carlson (72), Bob Bremner (73), George Carswell (75), Clive Lewis (76), and in sixth place was Stewart McCauley at (76).

In the 20 Plus handicap range the LOW GROSS winner was Art Ohman (90), followed in order by Ron Unger (93), George Nater (95), Doug Partington (99), Ron Swan (100), Gerhard Schaich (101).

First place LOW NET honors went to Mike Farmer at (70), followed by Lorne Ericson (71), Clayton Hack (72), Fred Derry (77), Jim Foster (79) and Bill Roper (80).

Reg Minty and his committee did an excellent job in the organization of this tournament. From the registration Ladies to the duece pot guardians and the kitchen staff a great effort was made to make the day a success.

One sad note that entered the proceedings must be mentioned and that was the sudden heart attack of Roger Simoneau one of the staunchest supporters of this tournament and it was this situation that understandably delayed the final moments of the prize presentation. Our thoughts are with you Roger get well quick.

Some candid moments.....

REGISTRATION VOLUNTEERS          GUARDIANS OF THE DUECE POT   K. BARLOW, G. BARR, G. HAMILTON, F. KUZYK    M. PARASUIK, P. WICKLAND, D. DALE, & B. TAYLOR.

Until the next time ....wherever you are....have a Happy Day !!
