Northview Golf & Country Club - August 26 - 28, 2001
The Pro-Junior team from Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club came out on top, lead by Professional Chris Macdonald and junior golfers Peter Kouloris, Tim Mooney and Brandon Price. The Shaughnessy team won Monday's skills competition earning them 5 points, and finished 3rd in the 2-net best ball at 23-under par, earning them 23 points for a grand total of 28 points and a slim ½ point victory over the team from Seymour Golf Club. While Shaughnessy may have won the competition that was held for the juniors, all ten teams who participated earned the privilege to be part of the Top-Flite Best of the Best. The thirty juniors who qualified competed in a 10-station skills competition, held Monday morning at Morgan Creek Golf Course. That afternoon each junior had the opportunity to caddy for many current and ex-NHL stars in the IBM All Star Pro-Am, and two of the lucky juniors even caddied for PGA Tour Professionals in the Pro-Am. Tuesday morning started off with an 18-hole Pro-Junior tournament on the immaculately conditioned Northview Canal Course, where the 10 teams competed in a two-net best ball format. Tuesday afternoon began with a question and answer period in the Air Canada Championship media center with PGA Tour star Steve Lowery. Lowery, a Hogan staff player, had just come off a successful 3rd place finish in the PGA Championship, and spoke to the juniors about setting goals, having a positive mental approach to the game and to every shot, and to playing as much competitive golf at a young age as you are able to. The intimate 30-minute session in the media center was a wonderful opportunity for the juniors to learn about life on the PGA tour. Tuesday afternoon the juniors took in the Air Canada Championship environment, watching PGA Tour professionals practice at the range and spectating during the BC Hydro Powersmart Shootout, which took place on the front 9 at the Ridge Course. 8 young rising PGA Tour stars competed in a two-man team alternate shot format. The winning shootout team of Aaron Baddeley and Matt Kuchar presented the Best of the Best Championship trophy to the Shaugnessy team on the final green upon completion of the shootout. The British Columbia PGA would like to sincerely thank Phil McDonald of Spalding Canada for their continued support of the Best of the Best and the Jack McLaughlin Pro-Junior Championship. A sincere thank you also to the Air Canada Championship, who do an exceptional job in hosting and accommodating the 10 Professionals and 30 juniors who compete annually.
