Long Irons and Woods Richard Leake, Associate Professional, Morgan Creek Golf Course I here a lot of people saying that good putting makes a great player. For many beginners getting off the tee is even more important than the short game. I will agree for better players this is the opposite. However, a first time golfer must learn to hit the woods if they ever expect to have fun on course. It can be pretty scary when you have 520 yards left on a par 5 and you have already hit your drive and second shot! A few basic points when hitting the longer clubs. Keeping your head as still as possible, may seem redundant, but is vital. The less movement the more solid the shot. With your driver your ball position should be just inside your left big toe with weight evenly placed on both feet, hips, shoulders and feet aiming slightly left of your target parallel, as if your clubs line of direction and your body were making two halves of a set of train tracks. Your body the left and your club the right. The next thing to focus on is to swing easy and let the shaft flex and the length of the club do the work. Don't over swing as good contact will be compromised. Good contact is where the majority of your distance comes from. Pick your target and let it go.
