Shannon Lake Public Golf Course
The toughest and prettiest course in this 3-day odyssey is the Shannon Lake Golf Course. It is 15 kilometers out of town in Westbank and it will take you close to 25 minutes to get there from middle Kelowna. This is a true full length golf course, with many elevation changes, many long par fours, uphill & downhill par fives and many great views of Shannon Lake and the surrounding area. Since I am a bit of a photography buff I will start off by reminding you to bring a camera. You will be almost 2,000 feet above the valley floor and looking out over eternity.
At Shannon Lake you'll need a driver and a sweet driver on the first tee. This baby is 440 yards long. You can go left but the grass gets long so no guarantees you'll have a 2nd shot towards the green. Go right and you are in a bunker at best, OB at worst. The good news is the green is big, round and flat and there is a healthy fringe area to miss on where you can still have a hope of getting it up and down. Number 3 is challenging par five running out to 520 yards long. The hole is a dogleg left, up hill, then down hill then back up hill affair with the green being tucked high and to the left. Any shot short of the 150-yard marker and on the left hand side will be impossible to get greenside. The green itself is sloped back to front with a large hill in it. So 3 putting is a possibility. What ever you can hit 200 yards, hit it off from the tee and out to the right. Then use the longest club you can count on hitting well and stay right. On your approach shot take 1 extra club and whack away.
Want to play the 18th at Pebble but cannot afford a trip to California? Then hang in there until you get to the 17th hole at Shannon Lake. This is a whopping 448-yard par four that has a lake all down the right hand side that you must cut over to get to the fairway. Go off to the left and you bring trees and bunkers into play. Once you have found the fairway you have an even larger decision to make. "Do I have the game to carry the pond that covers the entire front of this small and shallow green?" From 200-180 yards in you will have to be honest with yourself.
