Jericho was one of the finest in the Pacific North West, had beautiful
greens and was partially a links course (by water) and a parks course. The Canadian
Army in its infinite wisdom took control of the property, constructed buildings and
lost forever a great golf course that had been so carefully built by the golfing pioneers
in 1892. Hastings Park was an 18 hole executive type golf course (the first one in British Columbia), situated on the present P.N.E. grounds. It was a very popular course managed by Peter and Jim Brodie and such local professional golfers as Laverne Johnson and Stan Leonard got their starts at Hastings Park. Every fall a two ball best ball no handicap tournament was played there which was represented by teams from all over the Pacific North West. This golf course was lost when Empire Stadium and the facilities for the P.N.E. was built. If the race track and P.N.E. are moved perhaps the Vancouver Parks Board will consider constructing a sorely needed golf course for the area. The Old Shaughnessy Heights and Quilchena Golf Courses are also gone from their Vancouver off Marine Drive locations and have been moved to South Vancouver off Marine Drive near U.B.C. and Richmond near No.1 Road respectively. The land where both the golf courses were located was owned by the Canadian Pacific Railway and has since been developed. Ironically on a portion of the Old Quilchena Golf Course site there is a sign on the park portion of the property that says "No Golfing" - sad isn't it. Golf course construction was basically on hold until after the Second World War and the following list will give most of the construction activity up to 1980.
