Classic Club, in the Coachella Valley of Southern California, boasts a par-72, 7,305 yard Arnold Palmer-designed course that features rolling terrain with several elevated tees featuring a core design with pine, olive and pepperwood trees, offset by flowering bushes, shrubs and pine straw ground cover. We had a great time, stayed at the Best Western Las Brisas and we'd probably stay again. Small hotel, but we could walk two blocks in any direction and have lots of options for dinner. This was the only reason we didn't like the Westin, even though the accommodations were far superior. They only had a couple of options to eat and anything else was a ways away. We like to have a couple of beer at the room after golf, clean up and think about dinner, I don't drive then. Funny, we met another couple that were staying in the same area for the same reason.
Tahquitz - Terrible shape... grouchy starter. In fairness they had a lot of damage due to run-off from the storms that hitt California the week before. Maybe again
La Quinta - Nice shape... good course. Had a problem with the vouchers, but I think that was just the person checking us in. We had to get the manager involved... she had no problem. We'd play again
Bermuda Dunes - Fastest greens I've ever played on... great shape, houses on every hole. Luckily I don't spray the ball much, could be a bad day if you did. No starter, so when the people we were supposed to play with didn't show up, we didn't really know what, when or where to go. Lots of mowers and people working on and around the greens... really surprised me. I've golfed at Royal Colwood, Victoria and Uplands (all private clubs). I know the members would have been in the pro shop freaking out about that. I don't think we'd do this one again. In fairness though, I had a couple of days with some sort of intestinal bug (Montezuma's revenge) and this was when it hit.
Eagle Falls - Nice course, great shape... tough, surprisingly though, I had my best score and it was 93 degrees! Here again, could have been a bad day if you sprayed it off the tee, no houses... just rattlesnake warnings. Kind of target golf, you need to place your shots to have better approaches to well-guarded, elevated greens. We'd play again.
Classic Club - Saved the best for last. Beautiful shape, nice course and very challenging. What really made the difference was the staff, right from the bag boy to the girls in the restaurant. Also, bottles of water and coolers of ice on the tee boxes every three or four holes. Would play every time we go.
All in all a great time, I think we'll go maybe a week earlier and get tee times an hour earlier. We didn't have much time to get acclimatized, first game 68, next two 87 and the last two over 90, but that's not a bad thing to complain about.
