Seniors Golf

August 25th, 2000 - Shannon Lake Golf Club

The first Seniors Open for the Shannon Lake Golf Club was held on Friday, August, 25th/00, at the Shannon Lake Golf Club in Kelowna. This track is now member owned and the improvements are quite noticeable. New power carts, better course conditions and much better customer service.

The course from the white tee's measured 5,976 yards for the Seniors, a shorter course than what we are used to, but it provided a great challenge. The front nine has some tight holes and some good target golf. The back nine is where you can crunch your drives as the fairways open up and even if you miss the fairway, the rough is not that difficult to play from. There is just enough sand to make shots interesting and it is a good test of your course management skills. This course is enjoyable and challenging and can be played at all levels of golf ability.

There were 102 golfers entered in this tournament and there was room for more. Most Senior tournaments are shot gun starts, this is primarily done to get the course re-opened for regular members and the green fee paying public to enjoy. The lack of a full field could be that the tournament was listed as a cross over and probably many of the Seniors in the Valley were leery of what this meant. Basically, it just means that golfers start on the first and 10th tee with pre-set tee times. I found no problem with this system as most foursomes finished about the same time.

Another feature I liked was that you ordered and ate your dinner as you came into the clubhouse. There was no waiting around for table numbers to be called, etc. A very nice gesture that other clubs may want to try.

Enough of this.....here are the results:

* my apologies, if I spelled anyone's name wrong!

A big salute to my playing partners who helped me get through some "Senior's moments" when my course management went haywire! Bill Lee (82), Pete Wicklund (81), and Barry White (95), who could also smile after taking a 7 on the par three 4th hole. Many thanks guys for "making my day".

A very special thanks to John R. Ferrier, the BCPGA/RCGA, head pro of the Shannon Lake Golf Club. He helped me out with all kinds of information when he was busy with other things. He wasn't aware that the seniors in the Valley had an organization called the Okanagan Seniors Golf Tour. (O.S.G.T.) It has both a Ladies and Men's section and involves some 18 different tournaments throughout the Zone II area. Shannon Lake was on this list for the first time. The stats from this tournament for those O.S.G.T. members will counted. I hope the members of Shannon Lake appreciate their head pro ...he is one nice guy!

***ALL TIES BROKEN BY COUNT BACK***

That's it for this time around folks. Until the next time....where ever you are....have a happy day!
