July 14th, 2000 - Vernon Golf & Country Club The 16th Annual Walthers Pontiac Buick GMC Seniors Classic
The Vernon Golf Club is the oldest club in the Valley. Established in
1915, it is a "can not miss" golfing experience for all golfers visiting
the Okanagan Valley. Renovated by Graham Cook in 1995 to offer new
challenges. the course is characterized as parkland with graceful tree's
and a lazy stream running through the course, but while gently hilly, it
still remains one of the few courses still walkable. It is a majestic
setting right in the heart of Vernon. For the Seniors playing from the
white tee's the course measured a challenging 6,185 yards.
Once again, another Seniors tournament success was due to the
Volunteers. Under the superb leadership of amiable Vic Fry, the
tournament chairman, the following people have earned thanks from all
the golfers.
The chairman's committee of: Bill Whitten, Rob Roy, John Newlove, Bob
Hilger, & Les Parsons, these people were joined by the score keepers and
registration Ladies; Ann Fry, Lorie Schenk, Peggy Taylor, Mary Davies,
Dorothy Gower, Mavis Strother, & Anne Robertson. The rules committee of
Doug Cole and Les Howard who also acted as course marshals.
The 144 golfers were entertained by the super showmanship of Bob Dunn who has to have the largest basket of original jokes ever heard in a golf clubhouse. Bob missed his calling in life....he should have been a professional M/C for other golf tournaments. Thanks Bob for an excellent job. Now to the nitty gritty....This tournament is very unique in substance. It consists of 18 flight's of 8 golfers to each flight. There are no low net winners, only low gross and runner up low gross winners. The flight members only compete with the 8 golfers in each flight. There is one low net winner designated as such, but in reality, he is the runner up to the over all low gross winner. All scores posted are gross scores.
