Seniors Golf

July 4th, 2000 - Rivershore Golf Links, Kamloops

The 13th Annual Rivershore "Overlander" Senior Men's Tournament was a 36 hole event and was held at the Rivershore Golf Links in Kamloops on the 4th & 5th Of July. This course was designed and built by Robert Trent Jones Jr, and has a relatively benign beginning. A short dogleg par 4, straight par 3, short dogleg right par 4, and a shortish straight par5. Then the course becomes progressively more difficult. Most greens and pins can be seen from the tee, but often the straight line has the most difficulty. The challenge is to be near the straight line, but on the short fairway grass. There is lots of sand, (ask me, I know because I was in all 18 fairway bunkers on the first day!) almost always visible, but difficult.

Many of the bunkers cover the front third of the green and penalize shoots on the short left or right. recovery from the back of the green is usually easier. Pin positions can be difficult to approach often best with a putter from the middle of the green. There are some risks worth taking, some absolutely not! The greens are relatively large and consistent in speed. Most breaks are long and gentle, rather than sharp. Wind is always a factor, the easier wind is from the east, the tougher from the west. The long well-groomed tee boxes offer you the choice to play Rivershore at a variety of lengths. For the Seniors it was the White tee's measuring 6,347 yards for the whole course.

One comment I must make....the course as designed by Mr Jones is hard enough in it's original form. Some decision making group has got it " mickey moused" by letting the fescue grass grow to huge proportions and made it relatively user unfriendly. Someone has forgotten that a large number of golfers never break 100...so why fiddle with a great course. To the powers that be ...Change it Back!

Rivershore Golf Links

I had great golfing partners in this two day event and I must mention them. The 1st day, Merv pierce (190), Richard Tamaki (183), Alan Pasichnyk (183). The 2nd day. Bill Whalen (164), Mac McDougall (178), Tom Martin (?) Some other special friends...Len Hintz (162). Doug Stroud (182) Pierre Velcourt (173)

Enough of that. Now to the results of what is an excellent run Tournament. Under the chairmanship of Ron Hunt, the event was a success. He had a group of wonderful people to work with. The following individuals earned the golfers thanks and rightly so! The registration girls: Jeannine Joly, Arlee Morrison, Evelyn O'Brien Lois Pollard and Eve Skakun. Doing the scoring were Shirley Desimone, Jeannine Joly. Arlee Larson, Helen Morrison and the lady that gave me this info Sybil Plommer. Thank you volunteers all!
