The Salmon Arm Seniors Men's Open was held on Friday, June 24th, at the Salmon Arm Golf Club. Hailed as one of B.C.'s best semi-private golf courses. The Golf Club has been ranked in the top 20 courses in the province and the top 60 in the country.

It can be found in the heart of the Shuswap Region, perfectly situated near the midpoint between Calgary and Vancouver along the Trans-Canada Highway. The course features a natural layout with undulating fairways and well bunkered greens. From the first shot to your last the beauty and balance on this superbly designed course is sure to amaze even the most seasoned golfer.

Each hole features its own unique design and character, and every shot demands concentration to be played well. If you choose to play from the blue tees on this 6,738 yard course, be sure to bring your "A" game as it carries a slope index of 139, the third highest in the Province.

Needless to say we Seniors did not play the "blues" but still had a great challenge off the "whites" that measured 6,302 yards for the whole course. The overall low gross winner was Derek Bennett (75) from the Osoyoos Golf Club who had to play a sudden death, one hole playoff, with Bob Slonski (75) from the Spallumcheen Golf Club who took the first flight low gross title. The overall low net winner was Wally Okrainec (67) from the same club.

With Bob Slonski taking the 1st flight low gross honors the runner up was Dave Willis (77) from the Predator Ridge Golf Resort. Third low gross went to George Barnes (77) from the Kelowna Golf Club.

First low net winner was Gerry Hillis (69) from the Spall Club and runner up was George Graf (70) from K.G.C.C., third place for low net in the third flight was Alf Vaagen (70) from Summerland.

Second flight low gross winner was Bob Hands (80) from K.G.C.C. and runner up was Lou Prince (80) from Summerland Golf Club. third place went to Ian Nicholson (81) from Osoyoos. The second flight low net winner Al Hesjedahl (67) from Salmon Arm and runner up was Lester Kyle (69) from Sunshore Golf Club, in third place was Tom Wild (70) from the Spall Club.

Third flight low gross winner was Kay Dow (84) from Salmon Arm and runner up was Merv Pierce (88) from the Spall Club. Third place went to Don Whyte (89) from the Shuswap Lake Golf Club. The low net winner was Gordon Rowland (72) from Salmon Arm and the runner up was John Brogan (72) from the same club. third place in the third flight went to Vic Fry (72) from the Vernon Golf Club.

Fourth Flight low gross winner was Jim Turner (88) from Meadow Creek Golf Club and the runner up was Hugh McAgee (71) from Salmon Arm, third place went to P. Stelmaschuk (91) from Gallaghers Canyon Golf Club. The low net winner was Ferris Bromley (70) from Osoyoos and the runner up was Bob Murray (70) from Salmon Arm and third place went to Mel Beckman (71) from the Williams Lake Golf club.

As with all successful tournaments, it is the volunteers that come and assist in the running of the tournament. A special thanks to the following people: THE DRIVERS: Dot Bradford, Sarah Shupe, and Ann Pettitt, these ladies drove the shuttle carts between the parking lot and the Clubhouse. THE SPOTTERS: Loretta Evans, Barb Kennedy, Tom Nakazawa, Sam Nakazawa, Tammy Nakazawa, Garry Carscadden, and Pete Simons. What a crew! THE SCOREKEEPERS: Mary Bossenberry, Loretta Casavant, Bert Little, Loretta Evans, Doreen McColman, Joyce Johnson, Anne Mitchell, Kay Sholinder, Jim Johnson, and Last but not least that wonderful lady who got all this info for me. The Marshals also deserve thanks as well, some times we forget about them.
