May 13th, 2000 - Seniors Zone II Report
The second Seniors tournament in the Okanagan Valley was held at the
Penticton Golf and Country Club, on Wednesday, May 10th. This golf
course was not in the best of shape, due to the poor weather conditions
over the past few weeks. It is a credit to the grounds keeping force
that it was playable at all.
Normally, this course is a great challenge to any player and in
particular to tournament players. The fairways are narrow and well tree
lined. The total distance from the white tee's is 5,618 yards. What
makes this course such a good challenge, even though it is relatively
short, is the strategic placing of bunkers and the undulating fairways.
There is abundant water hazards all over the course and the 15th hole, a
short par 3, is particularly difficult when the wind is blowing.
Speaking of the wind, the edge of the storm that hit the mountain passes
finally laid waist to us on the course. With four holes to play the
storm hit and the combination of wind, rain, sleet and ice rain made
playing a challenge in it's self.
The overall low gross winner was Dennis Davis (74) from the Summerland
Golf Club and the overall winner of the low net was Bob Harris (65) from
the Fairview Mountain Golf Club.
During discussions with the club members I was told that at a recent
meeting, the club executive were given permission to pursue the
feasibility, and to determine the costs of building an additional nine
holes for the club. The board members would then put the proposal to a
vote and if successful could mean the construction of an additional nine
holes, perhaps in the fall of 2001. This would make the Penticton Club a
27 hole facility.
The next Seniors tournament is scheduled for the Ponderosa Golf Club on
Wednesday, May 17th.
NOTE: To partcipate in these tournaments you must be a member of the Zone
II Seniors Association, a member of a golf club in the Zone and a resident in the Zone.
