September 7th, 2000 - Gallaghers Canyon Golf Club
The 7th Annual Don Folk Chev-Olds Senior Invitational was held on September, 7th, 2K, at the Gallaghers
Canyon Golf Course in Kelowna. Gallaghers Canyon is a classic golf course that has endured for the past
20 years. Nestled in a forest of Ponderosa Pines it provides an impressive test of golf. The fairways are lush
and the greens were doubled rolled and cut for this tournament. I guess someone forgot that sometimes
Seniors can't play to a stimp meter reading of 11 or more! The contoured greens were like a roller coaster
where a solidly hit putt would not stop any where near the hole. However, this did not seem to hinder the
members who used their local knowledge and took 10 of the 22 skill prizes. The course measured 6,414
yards from the white tee's and was the longest course played to-date.
The unique thing about this tournament is that it is restricted to a handicap level of + 18 (a 16.5 index). Also,
there are no low net prizes. The low gross score you post is what you live and die by! It is a pleasure to
play this type of tournament for a change. I would like to see more of this in the future and the tournament
committee is to be congratulated for keeping it a low gross playing field. I'm looking forward to next year.
